In fact, I made her a bowl, and she straight up spit it out. Well, actually, she let it fall out of her mouth, but it was the same result.<\/p>\n<p>Cut to this winter, I had mixed myself up a batch of oatmeal and was doctoring it up with mashed banana and maple syrup. I was sure she wouldn&#8217;t want any. As soon as I got settled at the table, I heard &#8220;Aya wants some too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"stir-oatmeal by missalaneyus, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/misslaney\/15809181357\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7553\/15809181357_dcaa8b351d_z.jpg\" alt=\"stir-oatmeal\" width=\"600\" height=\"382\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was an instant hit, and for the last week, as we&#8217;re walking into the kitchen, she requests &#8220;meal&#8221; for breakfast. It used to be &#8220;cereal, and water, and milk and a ba-na-na-na.&#8221; Now, it&#8217;s just meal.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, I make it with maple syrup, cinnamon and milk, but lately, I&#8217;ve been putting together a gingerbread version. It&#8217;s really quite lovely. Spiced with ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves, it is very Christmas-spirity. \u00a0A splash of maple syrup and a swirl of butter make a wholesome breakfast taste special.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"reading-cookbook by missalaneyus, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/misslaney\/15808913699\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7581\/15808913699_8089c49c25_z.jpg\" alt=\"reading-cookbook\" width=\"600\" height=\"353\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gingerbread Oatmeal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Serves 2 adults or 1 1\/2 people 2x<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 c. rolled or old-fashioned oats<\/li>\n<li>2 1\/4 c. water<\/li>\n<li>A pinch of salt<\/li>\n<li>A pat of butter<\/li>\n<li>3\/4 tsp. ground ginger<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 tsp. cinnamon<\/li>\n<li>A dash of cloves<\/li>\n<li>A dash of nutmeg<\/li>\n<li>A drizzle of maple syrup<\/li>\n<li>Splash of milk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Directions:<\/p>\n<p>Combine the water, salt and oats in a pan over high heat. When it starts to bowl, turn the heat to low. Let it cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes.Then, remove it from the heat. Add the pat of butter and cover it with a lid. Let it stand for 5 more minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"spices by missalaneyus, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/misslaney\/15375286973\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7562\/15375286973_a98507906f_z.jpg\" alt=\"spices\" width=\"600\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a separate bowl, stir together the four spices.<\/p>\n<p>To the pot, add 1\/2 tsp of the spice mixture, a light drizzle of good maple syrup and a splash or two of milk. Stir together and taste. Continue to add the spice mixture by 1\/4 tsp. portions until you&#8217;ve reached the perfect level of gingerbread. I liked at least a full teaspoon.
