There’s nothing quite like browned butter to elevate simple ingredients. Its nutty, toasted flavor is elegant, yet reassuring. Browning butter is relatively simple to do, and it plays nicely with a number of ingredients.
Here’s how to do it:
Butter (For your first time, I’d try this with about 4 tbsp, but you could make any amount.)
A pinch of salt
In a saucepan, heat the butter over low to medium-low heat. Stir it occasionally as it starts to foam.
Small brown solids will start to form after several minutes. Incorporate those into the sauce as they appear.
Continue cooking until the butter turns a light brown toasted color. Keep a close eye on it, because the butter can easily turn black and burn. Remove from the heat and add a pinch of salt.
Ideas for Browned Butter
- Serve with store-bought stuffed pastas.
- Toss sautéed apples or pears in the mixture with a teaspoon of cinnamon.
- Toast nuts in the butter and then, stir them in cooked rice. (This is a trick I picked up from Cooking Light.)
- Try tossing cooked vegetables in the sauce, such as green beans.
- Top scallops with it or serve over fish.
Feminine and very ladylike, these egg salad toasts would be perfect for Mother’s Day or a spring Brunch. We had ours this year at Easter. I had originally made half the amount shown here, but quickly doubled it on the spot, because we ate all of them and everyone (except for Ellie) wanted more. Although…
I have a history with romesco sauce. Smoky and complex, I love the flavor combinations of roasted red peppers, smoked paprika, garlic and vinegar. If you haven’t had it before, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s guaranteed to up your basic, weeknight chicken by a thousand percent. As Ellie would say, “for real life.” So,…
I made this pear, goat cheese and pistachio crostini for Thanksgiving this year, but according to an old friend, I served something like this for a book club many, many years ago. I’m so glad she reminded me about the combination, because it is delicious, and I had completely forgotten about it. (which sadly happens all…
Pork chops are a staple at our house for a lot of reasons. First, and most importantly, we all think they are delicious – especially Ellie. But, they have two other attributes that put them in regular rotation at our house – they are inexpensive and cook quickly. When it comes to making pork chops,…
Part guacamole, part deviled egg, this appetizer is addictive. Make them knowing they will be eaten in minutes. Simple to create, the hardest part is peeling the hard boiled eggs. But, I promise it will be worth the effort. They will be a huge hit at your next tailgate or watch party. Plus, you can…
Hi! I'm Lane. I’m the wife to an engineer, the mama to Ellie and a small business owner. I love trashy T.V., good books, a little pampering and great meals.
